Why the ChickHEN really crossed the road

And we know this is true - Our own henny penny despite her age of 10 years plus would pop out an egg or two every so often.  Unfortunately,  she meet with a demise this past summer when hurricane winds swept her away to the big ole chickHEN heaven in the sky.  This is in tribute to our dear Miss HP.

We're moving on down to the orchard....

 Well ladies, what do you think of our new digs.

 I heard they have a penthouse that was once used by Jolly Rooster.  Seems he only let "certain" ladies stay overnight.  You know we've got to make sure Alphie doesn't get any high minded ideas.

 Oh, Hilda, at least we have more room here than in that chicklet nursery.

 And I noticed they even painted the walls before we moved in.  Well sort of,  half anyway.

The Ugly Stage

Little chicks are so cute but these fuzz balls grow into ugly adolescents.

 Of the eight we purchased, seven are mostly reds.

And then there is "alfie", so named because if there can be an alpha hen she is it. Always sitting on top of the waterer, she is the first one to "ask" to be picked up.  

Mr. Benson was reaching down to put food in their feeder and Alfie took the opportunity to find a new perch.  From my arm to his head - spunky lady.

Here they are.  The little chickies I've been waiting for.  Not really sure what variety other than heavy brown laying hens.  I truly prefer buff orpington's but this was worth the wait.  Every Sunday we stop at the Oneida TSC to, among other things, check out what they have.  Usually, nothing.  But today not only did they have chicks - but they were on sale.  How perfect is that.  $1.00 off of the $2.49 price so instead of 6 I got 8.  Right now they are in a stock tank in one of greenhouses getting used to there new environment.  Molly and Max have already checked them out.

Miss Henny Penny

Today our darling little Henny Penny gave us a winter egg. This little lady is well over 8 years old and gives us an egg every so often. We found this one in her box near the wood stove in the greenhouse.
